WASHINGTON – Temperatures have been soaring into the triple digits, and this weekend is expected to break heat records. Stay cool with events that keep you distracted from the scorching days.
Get a free preview of the Capital Fringe Festival Friday at 8 p.m. Just stop by the tent at Fort Fringe on New York Avenue and see 30 acts from the upcoming festival, which officially kicks off July 12. Seating is limited.
Time is running out to enjoy this year’s Smithsonian Folklife Festival, which ends Sunday. Stop by Saturday for “Chuck Brown Tribute Day” featuring performances by Cold Hearted Band, No Question Band and Junkyard Band. There will also be a narrative stage session about the history and future of go-go music.
The Paris Opera Ballet makes a rare appearance stateside with its production of the classic “Giselle” at the Kennedy Center through July 8. Run time is approximately hours, and tickets are $29 to $150. Buy online or call 202-467-4600.
Flashback to the days of side ponytails and terrible fashion with AFI’s Totally Awesome 6: Great Films of the 1980’s series. Summer flicks include “Commando”, “First Blood”, “Spaceballs” and “Married to the Mob.” This weekend, the theater is also offering a Two for $20 special, which gets moviegoers two back-to-back screenings for just $20. On tap for Saturday is “Night of the Comet” and “Fright Night.” Check the website for a full list of screenings.
For those brave enough to step outdoors, head out to Oronoco Bay Park Saturday for Alexandria’s birthday celebration. Between 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., enjoy live entertainment, children’s activities, birthday cake and fireworks. The highlight of the evening is a concert by the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra featuring “Stardust on the Potomac.” Fireworks close out the celebration with Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” at 9:30 p.m. The Marine Corps will provide cannon support.
