Free ice skating rentals, a fire truck ride-along and the school system’s annual State of the Schools presentation highlight the Veterans Day-related activities happening this weekend and next week around town.

The county, state and federal governments will be closed on Tuesday to observe the holiday.

That means all county offices, courts and libraries will be closed and parking at public garages, lots and curbside meters will be free. County liquor stores will be open during regular weekday hours and aquatic and community centers will be open as scheduled.

On Sunday, Montgomery Parks is offering free ice skating and skate rentals for all active and retired military personnel and their immediate families during the 12:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. public skating session at Cabin John Ice (10610 Westlake Dr.)

Cabin John Ice will also present a special patriotic skating performance at 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service is inviting veterans and service members on ride-alongs with its firefighters and EMTs on Veterans Day. Participants can sign up to ride as an observer in a fire truck or ambulance for 3-6 hours.

On Tuesday, MCPS Superintendent Joshua Starr will present his annual State of the Schools address starting at 8:30 a.m. at The Music Center at Strathmore (5301 Tuckerman Lane). The event will begin at 7:30 a.m. with student performances and artwork.
