‘Tiger’s Tourney’ Confirms It’ll Remain In Area In 2017

The Tiger Woods Foundation announced its annual PGA tour stop will come to TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm in 2017, confirming earlier reports that the tournament would remain in the immediate area for one of the years it’s not held at Bethesda’s Congressional Country Club.

Members of Congressional voted to continue hosting the foundation’s Quicken Loans National in 2016, 2018 and 2020 with the understanding the event would have to find other host courses in 2015, 2017 and 2019.

The 2015 Quicken Loans National will be at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Va., from July 27-Aug. 2. After the 2016 tournament back at Congressional, the event will move a short drive down Bradley Boulevard to TPC Potomac.

The course was home to the Washington D.C. area’s annual PGA tour stop from 1987 to 2006. Formerly known as TPC Avenel, the course and facility underwent a multi-million dollar revamp in 2008.

In 2007, it was the Tiger Woods Foundation that ensured the area would continue having a PGA tour event when it brought what was then the AT&T National to Congressional — widely considered a better course than the old TPC Avenel.

“With the extensive work that was done in 2008, the players who competed there previously will find it to be a much different golf course and tournament facility,” PGA Tour Co-Chief Operating Office Charlie Zink said in a statement.

The enormous popularity of Woods (and the 2011 U.S. Open held at Congressional) gave the local economy a bit of of a mid-summer boost during the events. With Woods healthy and in the field during the 2012 tournament, more than 136,000 spectators descended on Congressional in a week, even with the course closed to the public during the third round because of the derecho storm that hit the night before.

“My foundation is deeply committed to the D.C. area with our three learning centers and Earl Woods Scholarship Program students,” Woods said in prepared statement. “We are excited to take the Quicken Loans National to another top course in the area that will challenge our strong field.”

A date for the 2017 event hasn’t been released. In the past, the AT&T National and Quicken Loans National generally were played in early July.
