Suspicious fire destroys Germantown playground

WASHINGTON — A fire that inspectors say is suspicious in nature destroyed a playground in Germantown Wednesday night.

Pete Piringer, of Montgomery County Fire and Rescue, says that a passerby reported a fire at the Cedar Valley neighborhood playground on Seneca Falls Drive next to the Sally Ride Elementary School, on Seneca Falls Drive, shortly before 9 p.m.

Piringer says firefighters successfully put out what he called a “spectacular” blaze with lots of smoke, but not before it rendered the playground “a total loss.”

He says that anyone with information on the fire should call the arson tipline at 240-777-2263.
