Planners, planning experts and academics will be in Montgomery County next week for a conference on how the suburban county is getting more urban.

Makeover Montgomery 2 is a follow-up on a 2011 conference that focused on the now completed Zoning Rewrite project. Starting on Thursday, May 8, county planners will get together with experts from the National Center for Smart Growth Research and Education and the Urban Studies and Planning Program to discuss how planners can guide and manage a growing county.

The conference will start on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the University of Maryland’s School of Architecture in College Park with a keynote address from Georgia Tech professor Ellen Dunham-Jones. Then, the event will shift to the Silver Spring Civic Building (1 Veterans Place) on Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10 for a series of lectures and discussions on topics including transit oriented development, public-private partnerships and parking in areas of mixed-use development.

The full conference agenda is here and registration is required to attend sessions on May 9 or May 10.
