Councilmember Hans Riemer and local bicycle advocates will host a family bike ride from Silver Spring to Bethesda that will end with a discussion on the future of biking in Montgomery County.
The Great MoCo Bicycle Summit is set for Saturday, April 5 from 9:15 a.m. to noon. Participants can start the day with a group bike ride starting at the Silver Spring Metro at 9:15 a.m. The ride will wind through D.C., Rock Creek Park and up Grubb Road before connecting with the Georgetown Branch Trail and ending at the Jane Lawton Recreation Center (4301 Willow Lane) in Chevy Chase.
At the Lawton Center, Riemer, the Washington Area Bicyclists Association and MoBike will have a discussion on general bicycle issues from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Following will be a panel specifically geared at Capital Bikeshare from 11 a.m. to noon.
Last September, Montgomery County debuted its Capital Bikeshare system, including a set of stations in Bethesda and Chevy Chase.
Early ridership numbers for the county were relatively small, but bike advocates and county government officials predicted that will change once the weather starts warming up.
The push has also been on to improve bike facilities in the county and encourage people to use Bikeshare. WABA and Bethesda Transportation Solutions are hosting a Confident City Cycling Class on April 12 that is free to Bikeshare members. Bikeshare will waive any ride costs for participants who use a red Bikeshare bike during the class.
