A Tesla Mobile Supercharging Station is coming to Westfield Montgomery Mall, adding to the electric car manufacturer’s presence in Bethesda.

Tesla opened a retail store at the mall in August that does not sell the cars, but “educates” potential customers.

According to Montgomery County records, the mall got a commercial permit this week to install a 32-square-foot Mobile Supercharging Station with a $35,000 value.

That appears to be enough space for one station. Tesla opened its 54th charging station last week at a shopping mall in Rhode Island. The company says the goal is to allow free coast-to-coast travel for Tesla drivers.

The chargers are located in shopping malls and travel plazas with the idea that drivers can get a bite to eat while charging up.

The Superchargers allow Model S owners to get half a charge in about 20 minutes and enough charge for 200 miles of range in about 30 minutes. A 30-minute charge at a typical 7kW public charging station provides for about 10 miles of range, according to Tesla.
