Prep school employee arrested for bringing gun to work

WASHINGTON – An employee of Georgetown Preparatory School was arrested Wednesday for bringing an unloaded gun and drug paraphernalia to the North Bethesda school.

Montgomery County Police say that Stephen P. Lafferty, 51, of Frederick, was arrested Wednesday afternoon at the school on Rockville Pike.

Lafferty is the director of buildings and grounds, according to the school’s website.

Police say Lafferty brought the Smith & Wesson revolver to his office and placed it on his desk. He had intended to have work done on the gun after school. The gun was unloaded and in a holster.

Police confiscated the gun and arrested Lafferty. During a post-arrest search, officers found drug paraphernalia on Lafferty, according to police.

Lafferty was charged with one count of possession of a dangerous weapon on school property and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was released from jail on bond.

Mark Miller of Olney, Md., works near the school. He says Lafferty’s story doesn’t add up.

“He could have left it in his car or went back home and got it,” Miller says.
