UPDATE 4:45 p.m. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 10 p.m. in Montgomery County and a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect until 5 p.m. for the southern part of the county, including Bethesda and Chevy Chase:

* AT 416 PM EDT…A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WAS DETECTED NEAR POTOMAC… AND ANOTHER OVER FAIRFAX CITY. THOSE STORMS ARE FORECAST TO COMBINE OVER THE DISTRICT AS THE MOVE EAS AT 10 MPH. THESE STORMS ARE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING DAMAGING WINDS IN EXCESS OF 60 MPH.

The strong storms caused overhead wires to fall near Johnson Avenue and Burley Drive, causing about 1,330 to lose power in the area on Thursday afternoon. Estimated restoration time was 7 p.m, according to the Pepco outage map.

Wire were also reported down at Connecticut Avenue and Franklin Street in Chevy Chase and traffic lights are out at Old Georgetown Road near Beech Avenue.
