The 15-st0ry, 120-unit apartment building planned for 7535 Old Georgetown Rd. will include a glowing sculpture meant to serve as a focal point near the Bethesda Metro station.

The pocket park is planned for the east side of the building, which will be built on the existing site of the United Bank branch at Commerce Lane and Old Georgetown Road. McLean, Va.-based developer Kettler will go before the Planning Board on Sept. 19 for a preliminary and site plan that would clear the way for development.

The sculpture, which went through a May review by the Planning Department’s Art Panel, is meant to replicate falling leaves.

The material will be filled with translucent glazing, plants or photovoltaic panels. The skin of the sculpture will be translucent to allow daylight to filter through the piece. There will also be lights to make the sculpture glow at night.
