Lot 31 Excavation Almost Done, Road Closure Set For Aug. 17

Lot 31 constructionThe dump trucks that have been coming and going from the Lot 31 construction site will soon be a thing of the past, but Montgomery County will have to briefly close down Woodmont Avenue on an upcoming weekend.

According to the county’s Department of Transportation, excavation work at the The Darcy apartment and underground garage construction site is almost complete.

Truck activity related to the excavation will wind down and be minimal by next week. Trucks full of dirt have been using Woodmont Avenue to get to Wisconsin Avenue since the excavation began last year. Woodmont Avenue between Bethesda Avenue and Leland Street has been closed since the project began last September.

From the MCDOT update:

The project is in the final weeks of excavation and underslab drainage, slab/wall waterproofing and concrete operations are in full swing.

The activities around concrete: rebar placement, concrete pours, and finishing will be the primary activity now for the foreseeable future. The west side of the site has completed its footings, P4 walls and slab on grade. Elevated decks are in construction in the northwest corner at this time. On the east side final footings and slab on grade is being poured. The excavation activities are winding down and the project will have minimal trucks related to excavation by mid-August.

Construction crews are preparing to install a third tower crane to the site, which is being built into two residential buildings with a total of 250 units and an underground 940-space parking garage that will be owned and operated by the county.

The third and final crane will be installed on Saturday, Aug. 17, which means Woodmont Avenue from the construction site to Wisconsin Avenue will be closed from 1 a.m. to 9 p.m.

For most of the day, traffic on Strathmore Avenue will be able to exit onto Woodmont toward Wisconsin Avenue. Traffic heading eastbound on Leland Street won’t be able to exit onto Woodmont. Miller Avenue will remain open to residents or people using businesses on the street.

Police will be on scene to assist in traffic management that day, according to MCDOT.
