Police Want Public Input On Department’s Performance

Montgomery County police carThe Montgomery County Police Department is set to undergo an examination and re-accreditation process and wants public input into the job its officers and staff are doing.

A police major from Florida and a deputy chief from Oklahoma will begin their examination of the department on Aug. 18. The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) process includes on-site assessments and a public commenting session on Monday, Aug. 19 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Public Safety Headquarters (100 Edison Park Dr., Gaithersburg).

The examination is voluntary. The Chevy Chase Village Police Department went through a similar process in April.

Anyone who won’t be able to attend the meeting but would like to make a comment can call 240-773-5999 on Monday, Aug. 19 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. to contact the CALEA representatives doing the examination.

Telephone comments and comments made in the Gaithersburg session will be limited to 10 minutes. Anyone wishing to submit written comments can send them to CALEA at 13575 Heathcote Blvd., Suite 320, Gainesville, VA 20155.
