Stanton posts pictures of facial injuries online

NEW YORK (AP) — Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton posted online side-by-side graphic photos of his face, showing healing in the five days since he was struck by a pitch.

Stanton had tests in Miami on Tuesday to determine whether he can play again this season. He posted the pictures on the photo-sharing site Instagram earlier in the day.

“The Aftermath…Making huge progress!! Want to thank everyone who has played a part in my recovery process. Your kind messages, thoughts & prayers have meant the world to me. Pushing forward,” he wrote on his Instagram account, Giancarlo818.

The first shot was taken shortly after he was hit Thursday by an 88 mph pitch from Milwaukee’s Mike Fiers, and it shows him with two black eyes, swelling, several cuts and stitches in his lip. Stanton sustained facial fractures and dental damage.

The second photo shows some swelling on the left side, two black eyes and the stitches. But he looks considerably improved.

“He’s feeling much better, and you can tell in just a short amount of time you can tell how much better everything looks, the swelling has gone down,” Marlins manager Mike Redmond said before the Marlins played the Mets. “That’s why he’s going through the evaluations and the tests to see where he’s at.”

Stanton led the NL with 37 homers and had a major league-best 105 RBIs when he was beaned. The outfielder has said he would like to play again this season.

“I would want nothing more than to have him step into that box before the season’s over, just for him to have that comfort level of knowing that he got back into that box and didn’t have for his last memory of the 2014 season of being get hit in the mouth,” Redmond said. “But we’re not sure that’s a reality.”
