BOSTON (AP) — Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia could miss the rest of the season with soreness in his left hand and wrist.
Pedroia said after Boston’s 4-1 loss to Baltimore on Tuesday that his options are rest, surgery or continue playing. With the season nearly over and the Red Sox long out of contention, playing again seemed unlikely.
“There’s three things we can do. We’ll come up with a plan the best we can that’s best for the team,” Pedroia said. “Obviously, it hurts. It’s tough going out there and trying to do what you’re accustomed to doing and you can’t.”
Boston manager John Farrell raised the possibility before Tuesday night’s game that Pedroia could miss the rest of the season. Farrell said the 2008 AL MVP has been bothered by the ailment since midseason, and an MRI on Tuesday showed increased inflammation.
In 135 games, Pedroia is batting .278 with seven homers and 53 RBIs. Last season, he hit .301 with nine homers and 84 RBIs before undergoing offseason surgery on his left thumb.
Pedroia was replaced in the starting lineup by Jemile Weeks. Farrell said Brock Holt will play there most of the time once he recovers from an illness and a stiff neck.
