Huston nicked in 9th, Angels fall to Rangers

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — For the first time since he was traded to the Los Angeles Angels, Huston Street failed to close a game Sunday.

Adam Rosales and Mike Carp hit RBI singles in the ninth inning off Street, rallying the Texas Rangers over Los Angeles 3-2.

Street (1-1) was pitching for the third consecutive day. He had saved the first two games of the three-game series.

“I didn’t make very good pitches today. That’s the bottom line,” he said. “I felt fine.”

One of his 10 pitches was a slider to Rosales, who was expecting it.

“His scouting report is that he throws 60 to 70 percent sliders, so you’re looking to hit that pitch,” Rosales said.

The blown save was Street’s second in 35 opportunities with the Angels and Padres. He had not given up a run since being acquired from San Diego on July 18 until Mike Carp’s tying single.

“Even the best closers in the game, and Huston’s certainly one of them, are going to have a day where it doesn’t work out. For today, it was us,” manager Mike Scioscia said.

Los Angeles had won its last four games to take over the AL West lead. Texas had lost four in a row overall, and nine straight to the Angels.

Neftali Feliz (1-1) pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Rosales’ single was the Rangers’ fourth straight hit off Street to begin the ninth. Alex Rios and Adrian Beltre began the Texas ninth with singles.

“This was by no means lost in the ninth inning,” Scioscia said. “This game was lost on the offensive side through a bunch of situations that we either needed to score some runs with outs or get a key hit. We weren’t able to do it.”

The Angels were unable to score with the bases loaded and no outs in the eighth. Texas reliever Shawn Tolleson struck out Erick Aybar and David Freese, and Efren Herrera couldn’t check his swing on a third strike against Neal Cotts.

Collin Cowgill’s bases-loaded single and Kole Calhoun’s RBI grounder drove in second-inning runs against Nick Tepesch.

Angels starter Hector Santiago pitched six innings, allowing a run and four hits.

“There’s no doubt about his ability to throw strikes and I think he’s commanding counts better,” Scioscia said. “He’s been keeping guys off-balance. He’s been pitching good baseball.”
