WASHINGTON — While Maryland GOP officials call for an investigation of the operations of voting machines, election officials also want voters to know that if they run into problems, they should simply raise a hand.
GOP officials say the machines are out-of-date and glitch-prone.
Marjorie Roher with the Montgomery County Board of Elections says no matter what the issue it’s important the voters make someone aware of the issue.
“Ask for the chief judge if there’s any question with anything or if you don’t understand any part of the process.”
The Maryland State GOP says it’s had reports from voters who say their votes were recorded incorrectly when they checked their voter summaries. In the past, the Diebold machines in use in Maryland had issues with screens freezing, leading to confusion. No matter the issue, Roher repeats, flag the election judge on site. They can walk voters through the voting process on the screen, though they can’t walk into the booths. The election judges can’t look at the screens. Instead, they’ll talk people through the process until the issue is resolved and the votes are recorded as intended.
Maryland Delegate Nick Kipke says despite his frustration with the reports of problems, he urges voters to make sure to get to the polls.
