County leader opposes Frederick, Md., incinerator

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) — The president of the Frederick County Commissioners says the county should drop its plans for a waste-to-energy trash incinerator near Frederick.

Blaine Young told The Frederick News-Post (http://bit.ly/1pQbjFx ) Tuesday that he will suggest the county terminate its contract with Wheelabrator Technologies Inc. for the $386 million project. The commissioners are scheduled to consider the matter Thursday.

The project was proposed more than five years ago. It suffered a blow in April when Carroll County pulled out of an agreement to jointly fund it.

Young says he favors contracting with a trash hauler to dispose of garbage outside the county.

The county released a report Tuesday showing that under current market conditions, using an incinerator would cost nearly twice as much as trucking trash to a landfill.
