BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore’s city council president wants to create a new fee to ride the Charm City Circulator bus.
City Council President Bernard C. “Jack” Young has introduced legislation calling for an investigation into the cost of running the free service. The Circulator connects downtown Baltimore with major hubs, including Penn Station. It costs about $7 million per year to operate the free buses.
On Monday, Young proposed the idea of a fee of perhaps $1 to ride the Circulator. Young says other communities would like to have the service too, and charging a fee could help expand the Circulator to other areas.
Developers say the Circulator is attracting more residents to live downtown. They oppose adding a fee.
The Charm City Circulator has about 4 million riders a year.
