Va. man charged in HIV exposure case freed on bond

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) — A Virginia man charged with having unprotected sex with two women in Maryland without disclosing he was HIV-positive has been released on bond until trial.

Daniel Cleaves of Richmond posted bond Monday after a Montgomery County judge set numerous conditions on his release, including that he have no contact with women.

The 28-year-old is charged with exposing two women to HIV. Police say Cleaves had sex with the women on separate nights in August and September after meeting them at the same Bethesda bar.

Prosecutors told Judge Eugene Wolfe that Cleaves is a threat to public safety and may have exposed more women to the virus.

Cleaves’ attorney said Cleaves isn’t a danger, and that he had sex with the women during drinking bouts after he “fell off the wagon.”
