Man fatally shot by Hopewell police

HOPEWELL, Va. (AP) — Hopewell police say a man has died after being shot during an encounter with authorities.

Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Vick said in a news release that the incident began around 10:15 a.m. Monday when officers encountered a man driving down railroad tracks near an Interstate 295 exit ramp.

Officials say the man stopped once police arrived but refused to get out of the vehicle.

Vick said that after more than an hour of attempted negotiations with the man, he began making threatening gestures toward the officers and was shot.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/1wfXoxn ) that the man died at the scene and his identity has not been released.

State police are investigating the circumstances of the officer-involved shooting.
