Coast Guard rescues 2 near Wachapreague

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) — The Coast Guard rescued two men after their 17-foot boat ran aground on Cedar Island near Wachapreague.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads received a report from a concerned friend Friday night saying the two men had departed on a planned 20-minute trip, but had been gone for about two hours. The person also said the men did not have radios or cell phones aboard.

The watchstanders launched a response boat crew from Coast Guard Station Wachapreague. But the station’s crew was unable to leave the boating channels due to low tide. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew was launched from Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

The Jayhawk crew located the boaters about 12:45 a.m. on Saturday. The two men were hoisted into the helicopter. No injuries were reported.
