OpenTable officially launches mobile payment service in D.C.

OpenTable is officially launching its mobile payment service in Washington, with a list of 20 popular restaurants to start.

The service was quietly rolled out in Washington with a handful of restaurants this summer. It was previously launched in New York and San Francisco. OpenTable expects to roll it out in a total of 20 cities by the end of the year.

The mobile payment system lets diners pay when they’re ready; they don’t have to wait for the waiter to bring the check to the table, settle it up and bring a receipt or change back. Diners add credit cards in the OpenTable iPhone app before dining, then view and pay their checks with their phones after dinner.

“Just as we solved the pain of booking a reservation, we have a tremendous opportunity to solve the pain of settling the check, and Washington, D.C., is a natural place to demonstrate this,” said OpenTable chief executive Matt Roberts.

The initial Washington-area restaurants using the OpenTable mobile payment:

  • Aggio, D.C.
  • Chef Geoff’s, Rockville
