VRE stations in Stafford County to be expanded

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Two Virginia Railway Express stations in Stafford County are being expanded.

The expansion moved forward Friday when the VRE Operations Board agreed to put out requests for preliminary engineering proposals and environmental assessments.

The Free Lance-Star (http://bit.ly/1rcu0Xc) reports that the preliminary work could get under way in September.

The platform expansions would be at the Leeland and Brooke stations. The work is in response to expected growth in commuter rail passengers, as well as the addition of a third track along the CSX railroad lines used by VRE, Amtrak and freight trains.

The projects call for adding a second platform at each station, on the opposite side of the tracks from the current platforms.

The platforms are expected to cost a combined $10 million to $12 million.
