Marine Corps Marathon 10K winner disqualified

WASHINGTON – The winner of the Marine Corps Marathon 10K event has been disqualified because he had not officially registered for the run.

After crossing the finish line, the runner, from France, admitted he participated in the race wearing a friend’s bib, race organizers said. The runner’s name has not been identified.

“Though the MCM appreciates all participants whether from the United States or abroad, the MCM does not condone the illegal exchange of bibs,” Director Rick Nealis said in a statement.

The MCM recognized 25 year old Stephn Gedron of Lowell, Mass., as the official first-place winner after disqualifying the lead runner. Glenn Collins, 38, finished in second place. He won the MCM10K last year.

Liam O’Connor, 19, of Alexandria, Va., finished in third-place. Susanna Sullivan, 23, of Falls Church, Va., was the fastest woman to cross the finish line.

Organizers of the race said a record number of runners, 7,577 finishers, participated in this year’s 10K event.
