Social media search on for missing wounded warrior dog

WASHINGTON — A special dog with a knack for comforting wounded warriors vanished in July on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. But through Facebook, thousands of people are coming together to find Abby.

“There are more than 5,200 people that have liked her Facebook page. They’re just amazing. We call them Abby’s Angels,” says Cindy McGrew. She’s the owner of Abby, the lovable Rottweiler who’s about a year and a half old.

Abby went missing on July 4 from Tilghman Island on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Abby is a companion dog for injured soldiers, Marines and other wounded warriors. Now the search is expanding and there’s a $3,000 reward.

Abby’s Angels are printing flyers whereever they are, and they’re posting them in different areas of Maryland, New Jersey, Connecticut and Delaware, McGrew says.

She started “Operation Second Chance“, which helps wounded service members, nine years ago. And that’s where Abby found her calling as a comfort dog.

“I’ve had Abby since she was seven weeks old. I rescued her,” McGrew says, adding that Abby was the only pup from the litter who lived. “She had to have eye surgery last year, so she’s overcome a lot in her young life,” she says. Besides being a companion dog for wounded warriors, Abby also part of McGrew’s family.

The fear is that Abby could have been picked up since there have been no sightings of her at all. Anyone with information can call McGrew at (301) 938-2824.
