Joint Base Andrews preps for water outage, reduces staffing levels

WASHINGTON – Joint Base Andrews will continue operating despite an expected water outage at the base and neighboring communities in Prince George’s County.

However only mission-essential operations will continue beginning at 9 p.m. Tuesday, base officials said in a statement.

“While the water outage may present a challenge, the vital missions at Andrews will continue,” said Col. Bill Knight, 11th Wing/Joint Base Andrews commander, in a written statement. “I urge our base residents to prepare themselves and I assure you we are doing all we can to minimize the impact the situation. Taking care of our Andrews families is a top priority.”

Many facilities on the base including the commissary will be closed. And clinic appointments at the Malcolm Grow Medical and Surgery Center will be cancelled. Those with appointments should call 1-888-999-1212 to reschedule.

However the Emergent Care Center will remain open.

The base plans to post a complete list of closed facilities on its Facebook page.

Child care will be offered for staff who must report to work at Child Development Center Three.

Crews are preparing potable water tanks plus toilet facilities that will be set up throughout the base for personnel who live and work on the base.

Civilian staff determined to be mission-essential or emergency employees should report to work.

Other civilian employees who are authorized to telework, or have an alternate work schedule should coordinate with their supervisors. All other civilian employees are encouraged to swap a furlough day or take administrative leave, the base statement says.

Watch Col. Bill Knight provide more details about how the water outage will affect base operations.
