Some D.C. area schools to give teachers pay raise

WASHINGTON – For the first time in five years, some teachers in Virginia will get a pay raise.

The state’s 2014 fiscal year budget includes $72 million for the state’s share of a 2 percent salary boost for public school staff this upcoming year. It was optional for school divisions to accept the funds because a local match is required.

The House Appropriations Committee report shows that all of the Virginia school divisions in the D.C. metro area have accepted the deal.

The state funds will be available this summer and the salary increases must be provided by Jan. 1, 2014, though some districts may provide them in August.

Here’s the breakdown for local school districts:

  • Alexandria – 3 percent
  • Arlington – 2.7 percent
  • Carroll – 3 percent
  • Fairfax – 2 percent
  • Fairfax City – 2 percent
  • Falls Church – 3 percent
  • Fauquier – 2 percent
  • Loudoun – 2 percent
  • Manassas – 2 percent
  • Manassas Park – 2 percent
  • Prince William – 2 percent
  • Stafford – 3.5 percent

12 school divisions will not offer a raise.
