Man killed along I-95 in Va.

WASHINGTON – A motorist parked along the side of Interstate 95 was killed when he walked into the path of an oncoming tractor trailer in Stafford County Thursday afternoon.

The resulting police investigation closed southbound lanes at exit 148 for almost an hour, causing backups and delays along the interstate as drivers were toward Quantico.

Virginia State Police say the driver of a Ford Focus pulled off the road onto the right shoulder and parked near mile marker 146. A witness told police that the driver got out of the car and stepped directly into the path of a southbound tractor-trailer just after 1 p.m.

The trailer was not able to avoid hitting the man, who died at the scene, police say.

Police have not released the motorist’s name and were still trying to contact his family as of mid-afternoon.

The truck driver was not injured, police say.

The interstate was reopened to traffic about 3:30 p.m. and residual delays were expected for commuters.
