Opposition growing to Dulles Greenway toll hike

WASHINGTON – The Dulles Greenway, the 14- mile-long highway that runs from Dulles Airport to Leesburg is one of the region’s underused highways and the latest toll hike may be the last straw for some local residents.

Drivers could be paying as much as $4.90 during peak travel times under toll hikes recently approved by the State Corporation Commission.

There is already a state investigation into the price hikes for the privately owned roadway and now there is also an online petition drive.

The petition asks “Do you routinely avoid using the Greenway because of high tolls?”

Del. David Ramadan, R-Loudoun, has been leading the effort to get the SCC to stop the toll hike. He says there should be distance-based pricing on the tolls. There have also been proposals for the state to take over the highway.

The SCC has scheduled hearings June 6 in Sterling and July 18 in Richmond to review the issue.
