Democrats sweep Alexandria City Council race

WASHINGTON – Democrats swept the city council election in Alexandria, Va. Tuesday night.

Democrat Allison Silberberg received the top vote with 12 percent, or 36,720 votes, according to unofficial election results.

The five other Democratic candidates – John Chapman, Justin Wilson, Paul Smedberg, Del Pepper and Timothy Lovain – followed with the most votes in the 12-person race. They received 11.3 percent, 10.6 percent and 10.5 percent of votes, respectively.

According to unofficial election results, 298,593 people voted in the city council race.

Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille was reelected with 59.5 percent of the vote, according to unofficial election results. Euille ran against Independent Andrew Macdonald, who received 39.5 percent of the vote.

According to unofficial election results, 65,762 people voted in the mayoral race.
