D.C. ranks in top 10 for transit coverage

WASHINGTON – About a third of workers in the D.C. region can get to a job in 90 minutes or less when they use public transportation. This puts the area at 23rd in the nation for “labor access,” when compared to places like Boston or Seattle.

Nearly 88.5 percent of the region’s jobs are in metropolitan areas with neighborhoods that have public transportation, according to a report from Brookings. That coverage in Washington ranks 10th in the U.S.

Jobs are growing in the suburbs, but there is a lack of transit to them, causing local transportation leaders to discuss plans for the future that connect the suburbs in places like Fairfax, Loudon and Montgomery counties.

“The suburbanization of jobs obstructs transit’s ability to connect workers to opportunity and jobs to local labor pools,” the report states.
