WASHINGTON – The debate has raged for years and is best summed up by a line in the “Weird Al” Yankovic parody “White and Nerdy.”

“Only question I ever thought was hard/Was ‘Do I like Kirk or do I like Picard?”

This fall, it’ll be 25 years since the Trekkie debate began.

“Star Trek: The Next Generation” first beamed into syndication on Sept. 28, 1987.

Now, to mark a quarter-century of Starfleet missions in the 24th century, Fathom Events is bringing two original episodes of the long-running Star Trek spinoff to the big screen this summer.

Episode 106, “Where No One Has Gone Before,” and Episode 114, “Datalore,” will be shown back-to-back for one night only, July 23 at 7 p.m.

The next day, the entire first season of “ST: TNG” will be released on Blu- Ray for the first time.

The Star Trek: The Next Generation 25th Anniversary Event is being put on by Fathom Events, a company that brings a number of one-off events to the big screen, including operas, plays and live concert broadcasts.

Tickets go on sale Friday.

Seven theaters in the D.C. area are taking part in the Star Trek event:

  • AMC Hoffman 22 in Alexandria
  • AMC Tysons Corner 16
  • Regal Fairfax Towne Center
  • Regal Bowie Crossing 14
  • Regal Ballston Commons 12 in Arlington
  • Regal Fredericksburg 14
  • Cobb Village 12 in Leesburg
