WASHINGTON – When tornadoes warnings loom, there is only one thing to do: Take cover at some of the region’s best events. Consider redecorating your home, eat some maple syrup and stop by the U.S. premiere of a Frida Kahlo exhibit.

With the weather inching closer to spring, what better time to think about redecorating your home or sprucing up your garden? Luckily, the Capital Home & Garden Show comes to Chantilly this weekend. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, local experts offer advice and ideas for do-it-yourself home projects. It will be held at the Dulles Expo Center and tickets cost $7 for adults and $3 for kids 6 to 12 years old. Children under 5 get in for free.

This weekend, Artisphere kicks off the U.S. premiere of “Frida Kahlo: Her Photos.” As the only American venue presenting 240 images from the artist’s personal collection, the show opened Thursday night to a packed house. For those who missed opening night, the exhibit will be on display through March 25. Friday night there will be a screening of the Women Filmmaker Series” featuring Kahlo. Admission for the documentary is $6, but the photo exhibit is free. Check the schedule for a full list of Frida-related events.

In the mood for bugs for lunch? You might not be, but we know some frogs and lizards that would gobble them down. During Reptile and Amphibian Day at the National Aquarium Saturday, kids can learn about what critters eat, see baby loggerhead sea turtles and meet the “ghost of the swamp.” Cost is included in price of admission. Call 202-482-2825 for more information.

For those who prefer sweets to insects, check out the Maple Sugar Festival in Wheaton Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Taste sap that has dripped down from trees, then watch as it is boiled into maple syrup. Registration is recommended and tickets are $5. Call the Brookside Nature Center at 301-962-1480 for more information.
