Chargers lose RB Woodhead to ankle injury

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — San Diego Chargers running back Danny Woodhead is out indefinitely after hurting his right ankle in a 22-10 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

Coach Mike McCoy did not have an immediate update on the severity of Woodhead’s injury except to say the player was going to have more tests after the team returned home.

Quarterback Philip Rivers, however, said he expects Woodhead to miss at least a few weeks.

Woodhead was hurt on a 1-yard run, when he was stopped by diving defensive tackle Kyle Williams. Williams hit Woodhead directly in the right ankle, which appeared to twist underneath the player.

Woodhead was briefly treated on the field before being loaded into a cart.

The injury is the latest blow to hit the Chargers’ offensive backfield. Starter Ryan Mathews is out after spraining his right knee in a 30-21 win over Seattle last week.

Donald Brown took over the running back duties and finished with 62 yards on 31 carries — the most rushing attempts by a Chargers player since LaDainian Tomlinson had 31 in 2006. Brown also added five catches for 27 yards.

The Chargers (2-1) have one other running back on their roster, undrafted rookie Branden Oliver, who had three carries for 11 yards in making his NFL debut.

The Bills (2-1) had several injuries.

Starting left guard Chris Williams left in the first half and did not return because of a back injury that has nagged him for much of the past month.

Receiver Marcus Easley hurt his left knee while blocking on a kickoff return midway through the third quarter. Easley was treated on the sideline before being carted off.

Safety Da’Norris Searcy was escorted to the locker room late in the third quarter with what the team called an ankle injury.
