Training Camp Notebook: Day 1

RICHMOND, Va. – The Redskins took the field Thursday afternoon for their first real practice of camp.

The team wore helmets and shells, but not full shoulder pads. Robert Griffin III did the individual work along with the 7-on-7 drills. When the team did full 11-on-11 he did not participate.

Coach Mike Shanahan reiterated what Griffin said Wednesday: that he will not play the quarterback in the preseason.

“It doesn’t make sense,” Shanahan said.

He wants to see Griffin in football shape and that won’t happen for two to three weeks. So, don’t count on seeing him at all during the preseason. The team will continue to ease him into drills and when he is in football shape he will be added to the full 11-on-11 team activities.

Injury update

  • Adam Carriker had his third surgery on his knee today and it went well according to Shanahan. The downside is that Carriker is looking at a four to five month recovery.
  • Keenan Robinson left practice with a shoulder injury and is having an MRI.
  • The good news is that Fred Davis and Brian Orakpo are 100 percent and not being held back at all.

Roster Moves

The team released safeties Jordan Bernstine and Devin Holland before the morning session. Bernstine hasn’t been able to come back from a torn MCL, PCL, ACL and patella tendon in his right knee that he injured in the opener a year ago.

On Thursday afternoon the team signed free agent safety Jose Gumbs and free agent cornerback Ryan Mouton. Gumbs was originally drafted by the Saints in April of 2012. Mouton was drafted in the third round of the 2009 draft by the Titans and appeared in 36 games with four starts for Tennessee.

Josh Wilson also was activated from the PUP list after passing a physical exam.

Richmond

So far the new training facility seems like a huge hit. The fans came out on day one and the Redskins announced 4,000 fans for the morning practice and 6,100 for the afternoon. The 10,100 total is a record for an opening day of training camp in team history.

The coaches and players seem to love it as well.

“I don’t think it could have been better,” Shanahan said. “It’s a great facility. Everything we need to do is right here.”
