Largest class in U.Va. history on grounds

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — The largest class in University of Virginia history is on the grounds and going through orientation.

About 3,690 first-year students unloaded their belongings Saturday. After two more days of orientation, they’ll start classes Tuesday.

The university says nearly 31 percent of the new students are minorities. Eighty-nine percent ranked in the top 10 of their high school graduating classes. Their mean scores on the SAT were 665 of a possible 800.

According to the university, 259 low-income students qualified for grants and loans covering all their expenses under the financial aid program AccessUVa. That’s the most since 2010.
