LOS ANGELES (AP) — Six months after Gov. Jerry Brown called on Californians to cut water use by 20 percent, only a few state agencies know whether their efforts to conserve water have been effective.
California’s government certainly has been trying to conserve in response to the water emergency.
Yet agencies have not been required to compare consumption from this year to last, and The Associated Press found that few are.
When the AP asked agencies that draw the most water how this year compares to last, only four of 11 replied with comprehensive data. The results were mixed: Two saved more than 20 percent, two did not.
State officials say tracking water use isn’t as simple as it sounds because agencies have many utility accounts billed over different time periods.
