Gray to Run For D.C. Council Chair

February 21, 2006 - 7:53pm
WTOP Radio has learned that Ward 7 Councilmember Vincent Gray is going to run for city council chair. He'll make his formal announcement on WTOP Radio's "The Politics Program with Mark Plotkin" on Friday.

Ward 3 councilmember Kathy Patterson and Ward 5 advisory neighborhood commissioner Robert Brannum have already announced they are running for the post, although Brannum has pledged not to spend more than $500.

Mayor Tony Williams has already appeared at a fundraiser for Patterson.

WTOP Political Analyst Mark Plotkin says this very well might be a race pitting east of the river against west of the park.

Mayoral candidates who do not fair well could jump in at the last moment and run for this post. Plotkin says those in that category most likely would be Ward 5 councilmember Vincent Orange, or former Verizon Executive Marie Johns.
