District to get wheelchair-accessible taxis

November 12, 2009 - 7:55am
Veronica Robinson, wtop.com

WASHINGTON - D.C's first wheelchair-accessible taxis will be in service in December.

Royal Cab and Yellow Cab will put four of them on the streets next month.

In January, the entire initial fleet of 20 will be dispatched.

Passengers will call one number and the closest available cab will be sent to pick them up.

The specially-equipped cabs have a fully extending wheelchair ramp that folds out of the trunk.

D.C. residents who use wheelchairs and need a taxi now have to call a suburban cab company, and often those companies don't have a cab on hand when it's needed.

Wheelchair taxis are available in Arlington and Alexandria. They also are available in Montgomery and Prince George's counties.
