Water main break in Alexandria repaired

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - A large water main break that disrupted some Wednesday morning commutes has been repaired.

The 12-inch main was repaired about noon Wednesday, Virginia American Water spokesman David Barney says.

Crews have refilled a hole that was dug to access the main, and repaired the roadway, which included pouring new asphalt.

Limited traffic should be moving through the area by rush hour, Barney says.

The water main on Quaker Lane burst overnight Wednesday, shutting down Quaker Lane between Seminary Avenue/Janneys Lane and Duke Street. The pipes in the area are more than 80 years old.

Quaker Lane is a connector road for drivers accessing Interstate 395 and for drivers who use Duke Street to get to the Telegraph Road exit of the Capital Beltway.

A detour was set up using Fort Williams Parkway.

The break, which created a hole in the road big enough for a hot tub, left about 200 homes without water. The area now has limited water pressure.

When the first officers arrived on the scene, they say water was gushing up like a geyser, 4 feet wide by 10 feet high, before settling down.
