WASHINGTON - Metro is one step closer to having a dedicated funding source and a much needed financial boost. The D.C. Council became the first jurisdiction to approve $50 million in local funds for the cash-strapped transit provider.

The money will be provided over a 10-year time frame.

Maryland and Virginia must do the same if Metro is to qualify for matching funds from the federal government.

Metro, the nation's second largest subway system, has no dedicated funding source.

The council also approved the addition of two voting members to Metro's board. Those members would represent the federal government. Metro currently has six voting members from D.C., Maryland and Virginia.
