Expect More Snarled Traffic on Route 1 in Alexandria

April 9, 2008 - 7:35am
Adam Tuss, WTOP Radio

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- At the start of the Wednesday morning commute, the Virginia Department of Transportation said it would have three lanes open on northbound Route 1 just inside the Capital Beltway. Then, the Wilson Bridge Project called, saying only two lanes are open.

It's the same spot -- Route 1 North right about where Inner Loop traffic merges in -- where unexpected roadwork cropped up Tuesday, making for a rough commute.

And, that roadwork is expected to continue to make it a rough trek Thursday and Friday as sound walls are installed.

A spokesperson for the Wilson Bridge Project says a contractor made a quick decision to start the work this week.

The work area stretches up to Franklin Street in Alexandria.

On Tuesday, one lane was taken away, so all lanes had to merge into two lanes. Expect more lane closures Thursday and Friday.
