A Rail Car on Wheels Could Ease NoVa Congestion

September 30, 2007 - 8:16am
Hank Silverberg, WTOP Radio

WASHINGTON - A Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System that could make traveling in Northern Virginia a bit faster is in the works.

The latest $20-million bill passed for the rail extension to Dulles Airport included $500,000 for the BRT. It is a rail car on wheels that would travel down I-66 in a specially marked shoulder lane.

Congressman Frank Wolf, R-VA, has been advocating for the BRT in Congress. Congressman Wolf said it would take riders to places that metro and buses don't.

"Mass transit to Warrenton. Mass transit to Manassas. Mass transit to Haymarket."

Currently, the House has approved funding to study the new transit system, but the Senate has not.
