Police Step Up Aggressive Driving Enforcement

June 4, 2007 - 12:52pm
Adrienne Mitchell, WTOP Radio

WASHINGTON - If you've ever thought about cutting someone off in traffic, you might want to think twice.

This week, the Smooth Operator Program is in effect in D.C., Maryland and Virginia. That means there'll be stepped-up enforcement of aggressive driving rules.

Smooth Operator is the name given to a special effort by D.C., Maryland and Virginia to enforce aggressive driving laws.

Cpl. Jonathan Green of the Maryland Transportation Authority Police says these are things you shouldn't do any day of the year: "Speeding, passing, overtaking, failure to obey lane controls, traffic signals and lights."

"As long as you obey these laws," you don't need to worry about the increased enforcement, he says.

The first of what are called "waves" of the Smooth Operator Program starts Monday and runs through June 9.

Three other enforcement periods are planned through September, ending with the two weeks around Labor Day.
