Oprah to Speak at Howard Commencement

WASHINGTON - There's no doubt Howard University's graduating class will remember its commencement speaker.

On May 12, the queen of talk television, Oprah, will impart her wisdom upon Howard's 139th commencement ceremonies.

In trying to find someone who is inspiring and charismatic Oprah is about as good as they come, according to Howard President H. Patrick Swygert. He says the university is blessed to have her.

So how did Howard manage to get Oprah?

Officials won't say, but Dianne Atkinson Hudson, who is on Howard's Board of Trustees, is one of Oprah's advisers.

Students were thrilled to hear about the graduation speaker, gushing about how Oprah has been a role model.

Oprah will receive an honorary doctorate in humanities.
