Thanksgiving best day for online deals, forecast says

WASHINGTON — Move over, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The best day for finding deals online could be Thanksgiving.

Prices will likely be discounted 24 percent on turkey day, according to Adobe Systems Inc.’s 2014 Digital Index Online Shopping Forecast.

The average typically is 23 percent on Black Friday and 20 percent on Cyber Monday.

The shopping report predicts record sales of $1.35 billion on Thanksgiving Day, a 27 percent increase over last year.

“Smartphones and tablets continue to drive more and more sales online, which will lead to new sales records on Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

“With over 30 cents on the dollar spent via mobile devices, Thanksgiving Day will surpass Black Friday as the most mobile shopping day ever recorded,” says Brad Rencher, senior vice president, Digital Marketing at Adobe, in a news release.

It’s expected that 31 percent of all online sales — roughly $418 million — will be made by cellphones or tablets, an increase of 21 percent over last year.

Adobe Digital Index, which publishes research on digital marketing and other topics, says it bases its forecast on more than one trillion visits to 4,500 U.S. retail websites over the last six years, including 20 billion visits last month.

The forecast says online prices will increase on the Tuesday after Cyber Monday.

Across social media, the forecast says Amazon, eBay, Target, Walmart and the Gap are the most talked-about retailers.

The buzz says the top gifts this year may include the iPhone 6/6+, PlayStation 4, Roku and Fitbit. Sony and Samsung are the most discussed brands for 4K TVs, the forecast says.

Lego, Nintendo DS and items from the Disney movie “Frozen” are drawing a lot of social media attention, too.
