Who in the region makes Forbes 400 richest Americans list?

The richest resident of Greater Washington is only one quarter as wealthy as Bill Gates, who tops the Forbes 400 list of the richest Americans for the 21st year in a row.

Mars Inc. co-owner Jacqueline Mars ranked 19th on the list with a fortune estimated at $22 billion. Gates’ wealth is pegged at $81.2 billion.

No other wealthy individuals in the region cracked the top 100, though the magazine notes that 113 billionaires didn’t make the cut for the 400 wealthiest. Washington Nationals owner Ted Lerner, whose high-flying team begins playoff action on Friday, ranked 110th.

Carlyle Group principals David Rubenstein, William Conway Jr. and Daniel D’Aniello all tied at 190th place along with Under Armour founder and CEO Kevin Plank.

Mars is the secretive candy maker known for its Snickers and M&M brands, among others. Last fall, according to court papers, Jacqueline Mars fell asleep at the wheel of her Porsche in Loudoun County and hit a minivan, killing an 86-year-old passenger and causing the other driver to have a miscarriage. Mars pleaded guilty to misdemeanor reckless driving and offered financial restitution to the family, who said they forgave her for the accident.
