If planners are successful, a Museum of Science Fiction will join Washington’s roster of tourist attractions, and supporters have started a crowdfunding campaign to find a temporary home for it by late next year.
The ultimate goal, organizers say, would be a full-fledged Museum of Science Fiction in the nation’s capital by 2017.
The group’s short-term goal is to raise $160,000 in 38 days.
Commercial real estate advisor Newmark Grubb Knight Frank is working with the group to find 3,000 square feet of space somewhere in the District for a “proof-of-concept preview museum” that would house a sample collection of artifacts and display objects from film, television, literature and art, along with prototype interactive exhibits.
The pop-up museum would also host lectures, education programs, film screenings and fundraising events.
The all-volunteer group behind the Museum of Science Fiction is also working with museum design and construction firm Color-Ad, whose past projects include the museum at Mount Vernon, the Holocaust Memorial Museum and the White House Visitors Office.
The group’s crowdfunding campaign launched Monday.
