Want a free Nats cap? PNC Bank wants to talk

PNC Bank is trying to capitalize on the Washington Nationals’ success by luring in fans with snazzy, free baseball caps. The catch: you have to talk about your financial goals.

As anyone who’s seen its ATMs and signage at Nationals Park knows, Pittsburgh-based PNC is the official bank of the newly crowned division champion Nats.

To celebrate (and hopefully to gain some new customers), PNC launched its two-week long “Road to the Playoffs” promotion Monday. As part of the deal, all 145 PNC branches in the Washington area will be giving away limited-edition Washington Nationals “October Natitude” baseball caps to anyone who comes in and talks with a financial representative about their financial goals. That is, until they run out of caps.

“Branch employees are wearing Nationals attire and are being encouraged to create a tailgate atmosphere, complete with baseball decorations and peanuts, popcorn or other baseball treats to offer to customers,” wrote PNC spokeswoman Sonia McCormick in an email.

I didn’t ask, but I’m assuming PNC’s version of a “tailgate atmosphere” doesn’t include beer.

The bank is expecting a crowd of about 1,000 Nats fans Friday at an outdoor tailgate in the parking lot of its Dupont Circle branch from 11 to 2. The event will feature the famous Racing Presidents, including Teddy Roosevelt, who is fresh off his first-ever win.
