Subway explosion lightly injures 11 in South Korea

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — An emergency official in South Korea says it was an electrical problem that caused an explosion today at a subway station south of the capital. Eleven people suffered minor injuries.

The official says part of a train’s electrical insulation device had been damaged, and that’s what triggered the explosion.

It came as South Korean media are focusing on allegations of widespread safety negligence in the country, in the aftermath of a ferry disaster that left more than 300 people dead or missing last month.

Earlier this month, a subway train plowed into the back of another at a station in Seoul, inflicting mostly minor injuries to more than 240 people.
